The realities of dating a sneakerhead
Admit it. You weren’t quite sure what you were getting into when becoming a sneakerhead. On your very first date, you thought their shoe choice was an interesting take on a rather fancy outfit for a decently nice restaurant. Personally, you would have never worn sneakers with that outfit, but you were trying not to judge.
Little did you know that it was a lifestyle.
As a self-proclaimed sneakerhead, comfy yet stylish shoes were their passion, and as the months passed, you quickly realized there was no escaping this part of their identity. Here are seven things to expect when dating a sneakerhead.
There are shoes everywhere.
In every closet. Every nook and cranny. Under every sofa. By every door. Wherever you turn, there are shoes. When your friends complain about their significant other’s bad habits, you don’t whether you should laugh or cry. You wish all you had to worry about was dirty dishes in the sink.
It’s gotten to the point where you feel like your parents. You’re constantly telling them to put their shoes away so you don’t trip and break your neck.
Worry sets in about your long term savings.
You don’t want to upset them or discourage their passion, but you’re a little worried about the future of your financial situation. Whether it’s saving for an apartment together, buying your first home, planning a wedding, or even putting your kids through college, you’re not quite sure that the sneakerhead lifestyle is entirely fiscally responsible.
The delivery men are your new best friends.
Between your Amazon Prime addiction and your significant other’s shoe deliveries, you see the UPS guy more than your best friend from college. Thankfully, he doesn’t judge you for all of the packages you have to sign for, but he does know you and your sneakerhead by name.
The calendar on your fridge is full of release dates.
The purpose of the calendar was to share each other’s schedules so you could plan cute date nights, but that goal is long gone. Now your monthly calendar is full of shoe release dates as if that is the most important part of the month. (Because in reality, it is, and you know that now.)
Date nights look a little different.
Gone are the days of Jazz on the Green and drive-in movies. Your date nights now consist of sneaker expos, sneaker swaps or sneaker drops. Whether you’re curled up on the sofa waiting for the sneaker to drop online or eating pizza slices in a line at the mall, you ultimately surrendered to the sneakerhead date nights.
You can guess your birthday present before you even see the box.
At one point, you briefly mentioned that the new COMME des GARÇONS Nike Air Max 180 sneakers are quite cute. The instantaneous smile that appeared on their face was a giveaway. Dating a sneakerhead means embracing that they want to share their passion with you, often times in the form of gifting you sneakers they know you’ll love.
You start to wonder why you willingly wear uncomfortable shoes.
If they can make sneakers look good with any outfit, then why can’t you? The nice shoes you constantly pair with your outfits are not nearly as comfortable as their sneakers, and sneakers definitely don’t leave you with blisters on your feet at the end of a long day. The more you are around them, the more you start to wonder how you could incorporate comfy shoes into every aspect of your life.
