The Evolution Of Basketball Shoes (Part 1)
The game of basketball was invented in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts and grew in popularity throughout the 20th century eventually leading to a worldwide phenomenon. Players of the game and Sneakerheads alike use this sport (and its kicks) as a competitive edge filled with passion. The shoes worn during basketball have evolved with all different styles over the years. Here’s how basketball shoes came to be what they are today.
1960s - Converse All Star
The Converse All-Star Chuck Taylor is widely known as being the first official basketball shoe. Its breakthrough was in the 50s and 60s on the professional court. These shoes came in black and white at first, but other colorways made their debut later that decade.
Now, only a select few know that Chuck Taylors are really a basketball shoe. This goes to show how sneaker culture has evolved over time.
1970s - PUMA Suedes
The basketball shoe industry exploded with diversity in the 70s. One single shoe became the star of the show in the 70s after its debut - the PUMA Clyde. PUMA decided to give a young and upcoming superstar these shoes to wear on the court.
Knicks player Walt “Clyde” Frazier made the Clyde model extremely popular in the NBA during the 70s. People began rocking these shoes on the streets and intertwining them into their sneaker collection.
1980s - Air Jordan
The 1980s gave way to the king himself - Michael Jordan! His basketball career in the NBA flourished in the 80s and would later change basketball forever. His elegance, athleticism, and ambition shined through in his performance and on his feet.
The Air Jordan 1s were a staple in sneaker culture and popular among fans worldwide. This shoe was the perfect combination of performance and fashion with a mix of premium materials and creative designs. The rise of hip hop and basketball led to these shoes being seen everywhere on the streets in the 80s. This can still be true today.
